The number of movies that deal with ancient Egypt are very small. One can chalk up this as an example of Zanuck trying something different. "The Egyptian" was a best seller in the early 1950s, and Darryl Zanuck decided to take a chance making it: yes he wanted a showcase for his girlfriend Bella Darvi as Nefer, as well as the rest of the cast (Victor Mature, Edmund Purdom, Peter Ustinov, Michael Wilding, and Gene Tierney), but he was aware that these films rarely made large box office. It is from this work (actually a fragment, that we don't know the ending of) that the novel "The Egyptian" came from. The Egyptians produced many poems, but there main addition was a tale of adventure of a traveler and physician called "The Story Of Sinuhe". The summit of the former were the religious poetry and "The Epic Of Gilgamesh". Besides the literary remains that are in the "Old Testament" of the Jews, there were considerable works from Mesopotamia and Egypt. Few people realize it, but there was world literature in the ancient world before the Greeks came on the scene.

The peculiar combination of extreme hyper-sensitivity and aggression exhibited in some of the notorious campus videos suggests that we are dealing with people who are not entirely well. Lukianoff and Haidt put it less bluntly than this but mental illness is what it amounts to. The culture of safe spaces and no-platforming is a response to a generation that has been driven towards mental illness by over-protection. The authors, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, argue that many of these students lack the emotional armoury to handle free enquiry and are genuinely being ‘triggered’. To my surprise, I now find myself somewhat sympathetic to the perpetrators. The Coddling of the American Mind has made me reconsider. Nobody could that scared of words, I reasoned, and so the emotional incontinence and occasional violence on display must be the product of a vocal minority of hikikomarxists who will have to grow out of it or find themselves unemployable. From the viral Youtube clips I had seen, I assumed it to be manufactured outrage cynically engineered by those who fear that their theories are too weak to withstand opposing viewpoints, supported by attention-seeking radicals looking for a cause. Before reading this book, I viewed the phenomena of ‘snowflake’ protests and extreme political correctness on American campuses as being essentially comic. On a road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, and an overweight, Judge Judy-loving best friend riding shotgun-but no Katherines. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton's type happens to be girls named Katherine. he has written several fantastic books that hold a special place in my heart.Īs always on these posts, here is the GoodReads book blurb: So to start off, An Abundance of Katherines is written by John Green, who let me just say is absolutely phenomenal. Today I’m reviewing a book I read a while ago since I’ve been in kind of a writing slump, though I am reading Six of Crows right now. Today is another book review post! I hope you guys aren’t getting sick of these because I certainly am not. |
